SAFM Interview: Peter Knights on Why Hyenas Matter

Hyenas Unmasked: Rethinking Africa’s Misunderstood Carnivores. Peter Knights OBE, CEO of Wild Africa, joined The Jet Set Breakfast on SAFM to discuss the crucial, but often overlooked role hyenas play in maintaining healthy ecosystems, and why we need to shift perceptions to ensure their survival.

An Aardwolf comes out at sunset to forage in Southern Africa

Long misunderstood and unfairly portrayed as the villains of the African savanna, hyenas are extremely important to ecological balance. Predatory species help regulate herbivore populations, while scavengers provide an essential clean-up service by consuming carcasses that might otherwise spread disease. This also helps to recycle nutrients back into the soil. The diet of herbivorous hyenas, like the Aardwolf, includes insects like termites and beetles, helping to protect grasslands from overgrazing and supporting plant diversity.

Yet, despite their ecological importance, hyenas are in decline across much of Africa due to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, poaching, and deep-rooted cultural fears.

Hyenas remind us that beauty in nature comes in many forms. By changing hearts and minds about these species, we can help secure their future.
