Raising young climate champions at Radio IITA’s Children’s Day Celebration

This week, Wild Africa joined young climate champions at the 2026 Radio IITA Children’s Day Celebration held at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan, Nigeria.

Universal Children’s Day (also known as World Children’s Day) was established by the United Nations in 1954 to raise awareness of children’s welfare worldwide. It also commemorates the adoption of the Declaration (1959) and the Convention (1989) on the Rights of the Child. The day is observed on different dates around the world. In Nigeria, it is celebrated annually on 27 May and marked as a public holiday dedicated to children.

With this year’s theme, “Raising Young Climate Champions for a Food-Secure Future”, more than 200 children from selected schools took part in an inspiring day of learning and discovery. The programme featured conservation talks, wildlife education, food safety sessions, campus tours, quiz competitions, games, cooking activities, and hands-on environmental learning.

The children heard from experts about how climate change affects not only wildlife and Nigeria’s precious rainforests, but also national food security. They were also introduced to live wild animals by Dr Mark Ofua, wildlife veterinarian and Wild Africa representative, during his talk on how they can become climate heroes. The children were especially fascinated by the ball python and a small hedgehog, both rescued and rehabilitated at his wildlife veterinary clinic.

These experiences are designed to inspire young participants to think critically, act locally, and lead positive change in their communities through science, innovation, and environmental stewardship. Simple everyday actions such as keeping their environment clean and protecting nature can help build healthier, more resilient ecosystems and communities.

At Wild Africa, we believe the future of conservation begins with educating and empowering children today. Together, we are helping to raise a generation that will protect nature and build a food-secure future.
